Background

One of the 3 original “soft” bubble gums (along with Bubble Yum and Bubblicious), Hubba Bubba is a classic. In fact, it was the first bubble gum launched by Wrigley, who is known for Juicy Fruit and Double Mint chewing gums.

Launched in 1979 by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, Hubba Bubba quickly became a hit, especially for its ability to NOT stick to your face. Check out our history article to see how Hubba Bubba fits into the big bubble gum picture.

Did you know Hubba Bubba was actually discontinued for a while in the 1990s and then reintroduced in 2004. Those years in the late 90s and early 2000s were dark times for Hubba Bubba lovers.

Where did "Hubba Bubba" Come From?

It has a cool name too, doesn’t it?  Let’s do a little trivia on where the name came from:

It was inspired by a guy named Bubba

Nope!

Sorry, that's not correct.

It was inspired by a WWII military slang

Correct!

Soldiers used the phrase "hubba bubba" to express approval.
More on that

There was a dog named Bubba that accidentally ate the gum

Nope!

Sorry, that's not correct.

No Face Stick?

From the beginning, Hubba Bubba was marketed as the bubble gum that wouldn’t stick to your face, which was a big issue with some of the original gums on the market. This was a game-changer for kids who were tired of looking like they had a pink, sticky beard after a bubble burst. The slogan “Big bubbles, no troubles” became a signature of Hubba Bubba. We tested out this claim and it is 100% true. Good job, Hubba Bubba!

Hubba Bubba Varieties

Hubba Bubba used to come in 1 style, but the company began to expand its Hubba Bubba offerings in the 1980s with Bubble Tape. There’s also Skittles-flavored mini Hubba Bubba and all sorts of others.  Hubba Bubba Max Original is as close as you can get to the old school original stuff.

Over the years, Hubba Bubba has been available in a wide variety of flavors, including Original, Strawberry, Cotton Candy, Cola Party, Groovy Watermelon, Gushing Grape, and many more. For this review, we tested Original flavor.

Our Review

As always, we tested a standard serving size, as recommended by the packaging. In this case, that was 8.0g, which is a hefty serving compared to most gums.

Taste - 4.2 out of 5.0

TasteScale-4.0

The flavor is what you would expect for bubble gum. It’s delicious and it’s not too strong or too weak. Well done, Mr. Wrigley.

Flavor Duration - 4.0 out of 5.0

TimerScale-4.0

Our average duration score was about 12 and a third minutes, which corresponds to a 4.0 out of 5. Not bad at all. Curious how the duration scale works? Check out our methodologies to see how we test.

From one of our official testers: “The initial flavor was unimpressive, but it improved with chewing and lasted a long time.”

Texture - 4.6 out of 5.0

Texture-Soft-4.6

The texture of this gum is excellent. It’s a little on the soft side for some people, but it maintains a nice consistency for a long time and let’s not forget its most important feature: it won’t stick to your face! You can safely blow massive bubbles that land across your nose and chin and you won’t have to use a steel brush to get it off. Our testers loved that feature!

Here’s a quote from one of our testers: “It didn’t stick to my face!! Really yummy 😋 flavor. Texture was great and the serving size was generous and actually filled my mouth. Double thumbs up 👍 👍 “

Bubble Blowing Ability - 3.5 out of 5.0

sizeofbubbles-foreverypost-3.5

We were able to get some very big bubbles from Hubba Bubba–definitely above average. An expert bubble blower might even be able to hit “huge” on our scale. Most of us were consistently getting softball-sized bubbles that felt solid and satifying.

Conclusion

Hubba Bubba is one of the modern classic “soft” bubble gums. All-around, it’s a great choice with solid flavor, texture, bubble blowing ability, and even flavor duration. The coolest feature is its ability not to stick to your face.
