Background

One of the three original “soft” bubble gums (along with Bubble Yum and Bubblicious), Hubba Bubba is a classic, in fact, it was the first bubble gum launched by Wrigley, the company better known for Juicy Fruit and Doublemint chewing gum.

Launched in 1979 by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, Hubba Bubba quickly became a hit, especially for its knack for not sticking to your face. Our history of bubble gum shows how it fits into the bigger picture.

Here’s a twist: Hubba Bubba was actually discontinued for a while in the 1990s, then reintroduced in 2004. Dark times for Hubba Bubba lovers.

Big Bubbles, No Troubles

From the start, Hubba Bubba was marketed as the bubble gum that wouldn’t stick to your face, a real problem with the original gums of the day. No more looking like you had a pink, sticky beard after a bubble burst. The slogan “Big bubbles, no troubles” became its signature. We put the claim to the test, and it’s 100% true. Good job, Hubba Bubba!

A Family of Flavors

Hubba Bubba started as a single style, then expanded in the 1980s with Bubble Tape. There’s also Skittles-flavored mini Hubba Bubba and plenty of others. Over the years it’s come in Original, Strawberry, Cotton Candy, Cola Party, Groovy Watermelon, Gushing Grape, and more. Hubba Bubba Max Original is as close as you can get to the old-school original, and that’s what we tested.

Here’s the old-school Hubba Bubba logo. The folks at 1000 Logos have more iterations if you fancy a detour.

Our Take

For this review we tested a standard 8.0g serving, as recommended on the packaging, hefty compared to most gums.

The flavor is exactly what you want from bubble gum: delicious, not too strong or too weak. Well done, Mr. Wrigley. And it lasts, our testers averaged about twelve and a half minutes before the flavor faded.

The initial flavor was unimpressive, but it improved with chewing and lasted a long time.

Texture is where Hubba Bubba shines. It’s on the soft side, holds a nice consistency for ages, and, most importantly, it won’t stick to your face. You can blow a massive bubble that lands across your nose and chin and peel it right off, no steel brush required.

It didn’t stick to my face!! Really yummy flavor. Texture was great and the serving size was generous and actually filled my mouth. Double thumbs up. 👍👍

On bubbles, we pulled some big ones, definitely above average, with most of us landing softball-sized bubbles that felt solid and satisfying. An expert blower could probably hit “huge.”

In a Nutshell

What we like 👍

  • Nice soft texture
  • Doesn't stick to your face!

What we don't like 👎

  • Contains aspartame despite not being sugar-free

Hubba Bubba is one of the modern classic "soft" bubble gums. All-around it's a great choice, solid flavor, texture, bubble-blowing ability, and even flavor duration. The coolest feature is that it won't stick to your face.
