Airwaves Blackcurrant Flavor: Background & Overview

Airwaves Blackcurrant Flavor is a sugar-free chewing gum made by Mars Wrigley (the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company). It comes in a distinctive purple wrapper and combines blackcurrant flavor with Vitamin C and a menthol cooling effect. This is not a bubble gum. It’s a gum built to wake up your sinuses, clear your head, and leave your mouth tasting like a fancy British throat mint.

You won’t find it at a US convenience store. Airwaves is sold primarily across Europe and East Asia, and the Bubble Bunch picked ours up in Ireland, which turns out to be the perfect setting for it.

Airwaves History

Airwaves launched in the UK in 1997 as a functional gum: menthol and eucalyptus, designed to clear your head. The idea wasn’t entirely new: strongly flavored gums go back to the earliest days of the candy industry, when gum and lozenges were both used to deliver medicine or freshen breath. Airwaves just leaned into it harder than anyone else had in years.

The Blackcurrant + Vitamin C variant arrived in 2001, adding a fruity dimension to the menthol hit. Blackcurrant isn’t a flavor Americans think about much, but in the UK and Ireland it’s practically a food group. Ribena, blackcurrant throat lozenges, blackcurrant cordial, etc. are everywhere. Airwaves Blackcurrant fits right in, so we were excited to give it a go.

The brand grew quickly in Europe. In 2008, Airwaves became the official chewing gum of the FIA World Rally Championship. Rally drivers spending hours in a car bouncing through forests need to stay sharp. A gum that hits you in the face like a mentholated freight train seems purpose-built for the job. Airwaves also sponsored the Ducati British Superbike Team around the same time, further cementing its motorsport credentials.

If you want to understand where this gum fits in the wider history of chewing gum, it’s a direct descendant of the medicinal gums that predate modern candy: the ones pharmacists used to sell alongside cough drops. Airwaves just made them cool.

Our Airwaves Blackcurrant Review

Three members of the Bubble Bunch tried Airwaves Blackcurrant Flavor, and the split in reactions told the whole story of this gum.

One tester gave it a 1 out of 5 on taste and said it “tastes like a cough shop — very minty and strong.” Another called it “a good gum for chewing, not for bubble blowing” with a “very unique flavor” of mint and blackcurrant. The third said the flavor “hits you right in the face.” All three are describing the same experience; they just had different feelings about it. All three members who tested it are Americans not accustomed to the blackcurrant flavor, so maybe a Brit would find it more favorable.

We don’t think Airwaves is trying to be your favorite gum. It’s trying to unblock your nose. If you go in expecting something sweet and mild, you’ll be blindsided. If you go in knowing you’re getting a menthol-blackcurrant flavor bomb, it’s genuinely satisfying.

Texture was fine…not a lot to say about that. Two testers called it just right, one said too hard. Duration ran 9 to 11 minutes. Bubble size was tiny to small, which is expected since this is a chewing gum through and through.

The bottom line: if you’re in Europe or another place this is sold, give this one a try. It’s a taste you’ll either love or hate, but either way you’ll come away feeling refreshed and wide awake.

Bonus Info

The Splinter Cell Connection

Airwaves has one of the more unusual pop culture placements in gum history. The lead character Sam Fisher in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell (one of the most popular stealth game franchises of the 2000s) chews Airwaves throughout the game, with product placement scenes woven into multiple entries in the series. A gum whose whole identity is “stays sharp, stays alert” paired with a game about a special ops agent sneaking through the dark. You can see the fit.

A Classic Airwaves Ad

Airwaves’ early European ads leaned into surreal, high-concept visuals. This 2000 spot is a perfect time capsule of the brand’s early identity:

In a Nutshell

What we like 👍

  • Interesting flavor
  • Pretty good duration
  • Sugar free

What we don't like 👎

  • Cough drop style flavor might not be for everyone

Airwaves Blackcurrant is the gum equivalent of a cooling lozenge. Wrigley built this one to clear your head, and it shows: our testers described a strong, minty, blackcurrant flavor that hits you right in the face and tastes a bit like a cough drop. We found ours in Ireland, fitting for a gum sold mostly across Europe rather than the US. As a chewing gum, it's not made for bubbles, but if you want a flavor that really wakes you up, give it a go.
