Blue Q Chewing Gums: Background & Overview

Blue Q is a novelty gift company from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, founded in 1988 by brothers Mitch and Seth Nash. They make socks, tote bags, oven mitts, lip balm, dish towels, and about a hundred other things you’d find in a good gift shop. They’re employee-owned, and their Arts & Assembly team, which has been part of the company for over 25 years, includes workers with and without disabilities who help put the finishing touches on products.

The gum is a significant part of the lineup. Around 60 flavors, all sold in small matchbox-style packs with 8 candy-coated pieces for about $2.99. The packaging is the whole point. Some highlights from the catalog: Scum Gum (“For People Who Suck!”), Cat Butt Gum, and dozens of R-rated ones we won’t list here, but you can see for yourself at BlueQ’s website. There’s also a completely family-friendly Dad Jokes Gum with 10 free jokes inside, for balance.

We tried two flavors: Scum Gum (cinnamon) and Here Comes My Cool Dad (fruit). Both manufactured in Canada on Blue Q’s behalf.

The Bubble Bunch tried both flavors across four testers, and the taste scores were consistent: all four gave it 4/5. The gum tastes good, but nobody was blown away.

The cinnamon (Scum Gum) was the standout. “Strong and long lasting,” one tester wrote. For a novelty gum sold at gift shops, that’s a real accomplishment.

The bubbles told a stranger story. One tester got football-sized bubbles. Two others got ping pong ball size. That’s a huge range, and it comes down to the candy shell. The hard coating takes a while to fully blend into the gum base. One tester nailed the issue: “the little hard shell didn’t really mix well into the gum base for a long time.” Chew it a bit before you try to blow.

Texture split the same way: two called it too soft, one too hard, one just right. Same candy-shell variable.

The main honest knock is value: 8 pieces for $2.99 is thin if you’re buying it to chew. You’re partly paying for the joke, which is fine, but you should know that going in.
