Marukawa Fusen Green Apple: Background & Overview
Marukawa Fusen Green Apple is part of the Marble Fusen Gum lineup from Marukawa Confectionery Co., Ltd. in Nagoya, Japan. Four marble-sized pieces per box, thin sugar coating, been made the same way since 1959.
For the full Marukawa story (the company’s history back to 1888, the dagashi culture, the lottery slip, why the orange is the flagship), see our Marukawa Orange review. This one is about the green apple.
The flavor is specifically Granny Smith territory: tart, bright, and a little sharp. Not the generic sweet apple you get from most candy. This one has an edge to it.
Our Marukawa Fusen Green Apple Review
Bubble Bunch testers gave the green apple 5/5 on taste. That’s a unanimous perfect score on flavor, which doesn’t happen often. One tester put it well: “Granny Smith apple flavor is great.” The “but short lived” that followed is the only honest caveat, and we’ll get to that.
Texture split between Just Right and Too Soft. No one called it too hard, which puts it in the comfortable half of our lineup. The two votes just landed in different spots.
Bubbles ran ping pong to tennis ball. The limiting factor here is clearly the serving size, and one tester figured it out immediately: “I think if you had more of it you could blow a really big bubble! I only had 5 grams, not enough gum to blow a huge bubble.” That’s the Marukawa deal. The gum base is capable. Four marble pieces just isn’t much mass to work with.
Duration was short: around 5 to 6 minutes. For a small box of pocket candy, that’s acceptable, but we wish it were longer.
Green apple is one of the stronger flavors in the Marukawa lineup. If the orange is the safe choice, this is the one for people who want a little more bite. Check our best bubble gum rankings to see how the full Marukawa family stacks up.
