Bazooka Grape: Background & Overview
Bazooka Grape is a flavor variation of the classic Bazooka bubble gum, made by Bazooka Candy Brands. Same firm chew, same individually-wrapped pieces, same Bazooka Joe comic strip tucked inside. Just grape instead of pink.
If you want the full Bazooka story (Brooklyn 1947, the Shorin family, the WWII-era name, Bazooka Joe and his gang, the comics going away in 2012 and coming back in 2019), it’s all in our Bazooka Original review. This one is just about the grape.
You won’t find it at every corner store. The original pink flavor is everywhere; grape takes a bit more hunting. Specialty candy shops and online retailers are your best bet.
Our Bazooka Grape Review
The honest short version: good flavor, punishing texture.
Three Bubble Bunch testers tried it, and all three had the same complaint: too hard. Two called it “Way Too Hard.” One tester summed it up well: “Gives my mouth a workout. Can’t really blow a bubble with it.” Bazooka has always been on the firm side; grape is no different.
The flavor, though, is genuinely nice. One tester specifically appreciated that it’s more subtle than the typical modern grape flavor bomb: “Nice flavor, a little more subtle than today’s typical flavor punches.” That’s actually a rare quality in a grape gum. Most brands lean hard into the artificial sweetness. Bazooka Grape doesn’t, and it’s better for it. Another tester put it simply: “Old fashioned!”
Bubbles landed in the ping pong to tennis ball range. Flavor ran about 6 minutes flat across all three testers.
The Bazooka Joe comic in the wrapper is still there. One tester’s verdict: “Comics are a fun idea, but they aren’t very funny.” Fair. The jokes have always been more groan than laugh, but that’s Ok.

Bazooka brings the nostalgia. This is a firm, old-fashioned chew, noticeably harder than the soft modern gums, so your jaws will feel it. If you can find this flavor, grape is nice and refreshingly subtle next to today's flavor bombs, but it's mostly gone after a few minutes. Bubbles are definitely possible, just expect to work for them since the gum is so tough. The serving runs small, too. Best of all is the classic Bazooka Joe comic in every wrapper, a tradition since 1953. The jokes are more groan than laugh, but that is part of the charm.
