Marukawa Original: Background & Overview

Marukawa Original is the classic bubble gum flavor from Marukawa Confectionery Co., Ltd. in Nagoya, Japan. Same format as the full Marble Fusen Gum lineup: four marble-sized pieces per box, thin sugar coating, been made this way since 1959.

Our Marukawa Original Review

Our Bubble Bunch testers tried the Original, and all agreed on texture: Just Right, no debate. The flavor is where it gets interesting. One tester described it well: “classic bubble gum taste with a Japanese twist.” That’s exactly right. If you know American bubble gum, the Original will feel familiar, but there’s a slightly different character to it, a little softer and more delicate, that sets it apart. Score came in at a solid 4.5.

The honest limitation is the bubbles. Both testers maxed out at ping pong size, which is the smallest of all the Marukawa gums we’ve tested. Four marble pieces gives you a limited starting mass, and ping pong is about where you land. Duration ran 6.3 to 9 minutes, in line with the rest of the Marukawa family.
